Independent Recording Artist, Rina Chanel , New Soul Single, Worthy" Hits #1 in the UK

Updated: Dec 8, 2021

Give me a little bit about your background. Where are you from and how did you get started in music?

I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. After I turned 10, my mom and I ended up moving to Virginia Beach. Now, I live in northern, VA, in the DMV area right outside of Washington, D.C.

I grew up in a musical family with my father, cousins, aunts, and my grandfather who all sang and/or played a musical instrument. I always remembered hearing music at home from Sade, Anita Baker, and Tina Marie. I was always singing in church, chorus, musicals and even singing opera. I ended up studying music/voice in college and attended on a voice scholarship.

What was the most memorable moment in your music career?

When I found out that my music was being played in the U.K. and other countries. I was just amazed and humbled to know that people around the world were appreciating my music and being impacted by it. The cherry on top was when my debut single “Worthy” hit number one on various platforms and playlists. I was so honored to know that radio presenters, DJs, and listeners supported my music and felt so positive about it. It made me feel good to know that my music was making an impact and it was being recognized.

What was your most challenging moment?

It hasn’t always been easy staying positive and optimistic during the COVID - 19 pandemic and its devastating effects. Everyone knows someone either in their family or friend that has passed away or has been impacted by the virus. It definitely weighs on me, but I rely on my faith, purpose, and love of my family to continue to motivate me to do God-given purpose and to keep pushing forward no matter what.

Who are your musical influences?

Some of my musical influences are Sade, Anita Baker, Amy Winehouse, Babyface, Luther Vandross, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Chante Moore Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion. All of these artists have distinctive voices, timeless quality, and their own special brand of artistry.

If you could do a duet and or have someone write a song for you from your favorite artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

I would love to do a duet with and/or work with Babyface. He is such a timeless and class act. For me, Babyface has always represented timeless, quality music. I am such a fan of his work.

What is the last song you’ve listened to by another artist and who are your present favorites?

“Live Out Your Love” by Kem featuring Toni Braxton is the last song that I listened to. I really love both of these soulful artists and this collaboration is heaven to me. My favorites at the moment are Chante Moore, Shaila Prospere, Tracy Cruz, and Tanqueray Haywood.

What was your most embarrassing moment while at a live performance or interview?

I forget the words to a song when performing with my band The Groove Factor. I just got the crowd involved in a place of the missing words. No one seemed to know and the show went on.

How many singles/albums do you have out presently and are there any projects in the works?

I have been fortunate and blessed enough to be able to put out 2 singles “Worthy” and “Made.” I am so excited and look forward to putting out new music and other developments in 2021.

What are your either weird habits or traditions before performing live or recording?

I normally do my vocal warm-ups and exercises, drink tea and do deep breathing exercises, and stretching to relax before a performance. I always make sure to bring throat lozenges and water. I try to keep quiet until soundcheck, if possible. If I’m recording, I bring a scarf to keep my neck warm and a granola bar to snack on.

What advice would you like to give to upcoming artists?

Never give up on your dreams no matter what anyone tells you. People will always try to discourage you when they don’t understand or have ever pursued a dream. Be persistent about following your dreams and your creative convictions. Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams, and will encourage and support your dreams. Always look for ways to feed/fuel your creativity. Self-care is so important! Don’t forget to take care of your mind, body, and your soul.
